Bowsprit

The bowsprit is as massive as the other spars, of course, and loaded with heavy fittings. This spar has to take a lot of the strain of the entire rig on any point of sail higher than a beam reach, plus the repetitive strains of pitching in head seas. It needs every one of those all-chain stays.
