Sail

Down in the hold the restorers have hung a typical course (one of a set of square sails) made in the traditional fashion by volunteer Tall Ship seamen in Norway. It is all hand-sewn, made in a sort of mega-sewing-bee by these enthusiasts. As Andrew (the manager) said, the winter nights are long and boring in Norway! The visitor can feel the weight of the cloth and imagine what it was like to stand on a footrope 75 feet or more off the deck in a heavy sea and wrestle this mass of sailcloth up to the yard -- soaking wet no less.
