Steve Rankin's Bu'kwiis

On Friday Oct 29th, Steve Rankin and Mary Anderson passed through Santa Cruz CA on their way to Mexico, aboard Steve's Gazelle Bu'kwiis (junk cat ketch). Steve and Mary were kind enough to allow me to poke around their boat and take photographs for my own education and for the benefit of other members of the junkrig mailing list -- we have all been very curious about Steve's extensive refit and re-rig of this boat. So, here are the pictures!

Bu'kwiis

Wandering About On Deck
Various details that caught my eye.
Masts and Sails
Pictures specifically of the masts, partners, and sail bundles.
The Amazing Bimini
Bu'kwiis has an ambitious enclosed bimini (a "greenhouse") aft.
Davits
The davits are very interesting and well worth studying.
WindVane Self Steering Gear
Bu'kwiis has a Brent Swain-design windvane self-steering gear (pendulum action) with a couple of innovations by Steve.
PilotHouse
Shots of the pilothouse interior.
Accommodations
Below decks, comfortable and spacious accommodations.
Stowage
A few glimpses into the messy bits inside lockers and under counters.
Systems
Some plumbing, wiring, bilges, etc.
Departure
To get a better idea of the boat as a whole and of the rigging, here are some larger, high-resolution pics of Bu'kwiis on her way to Monterey, leaving Santa Cruz on a fine (dead calm) Saturday morning. Warning, some of these images are very large.

I'd like to thank Steve and Mary very much for allowing a nosy stranger to invade their boat and monopolise most of their day in port. It was very good of them.
